Meet the tutor: Diana Pilcher

“I am a fine artist working with painting and printmaking. I have taught fine art iprintmaking and painting in both further education (3 years) and in higher education (13 years). During my career I have practiced a variety of printmaking methods specializing in etching, photoetching, and most recently since 2018, the Japanese practice of mokuhanga.the Japanese practice of mokuhanga.

What is Mokuhanga?

Mokuhanga is a Japanese woodblock printing technique that originated in the 17th century and is still used today. The word mokuhanga is a combination of the words moku (wood) and hanga (print). It's a type of relief printing that involves carving an image into a block of wood, inking the surface, and then pressing the block by hand onto paper to create a print.

One of the most famous examples of mokuhanga is Under the Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Recently, mokuhanga has gained popularity internationally because it uses natural materials, doesn't require a heavy printing press, and is well-suited for home studios.
