Experience: Some experience of intaglio printmaking is advisable. This is also suitable for experienced printmakers looking to extend their skills or etchers looking to change from traditional toxic etching to less toxic, modern equivalents.

Location: Print Workshop, Lower Ground Floor, Exeter Phoenix

What you’ll learn: We will be etching Copper-Plate with acrylic resists and ferric chloride. This offers all the expressive mark-making typical of traditional etching without the use of harmful organic solvents. On this weekend “crash-course” you will have the opportunity to experience how to apply and manipulate these etching materials to create original copper-plate etchings Hard ground, soft ground, aquatint, wash and semi-permeable grounds on offer. Anticipate working on several small test plates in order to learn as much as possible in the time available.Copper-plate etchings are printed on the etching press using traditional intaglio techniques. Depending on the dynamic of the group, different ways of applying colour could also be introduced.

This is an intensive course and comes with an 11 page pack of notes.

Materials and Equipment:

General shared tools and equipment are provided on the course but there are charges for additional papers and inks.

On the day:

Tea and coffee will be available in the workshop. The Exeter Phoenix Café is also open should you wish to purchase other refreshments during the workshop (sometimes the cafe is closed on Sundays)

  • This is an intensive course and comes with an 11 page pack of notes.

What does this course cover:

  • Course participants will be introduced to the workshop, preparing copperplate with a variety of etching grounds, etching with ferric chloride, stripping grounds and gain a good insight into creating and printing etchings.

  • The first day will focus on explaining Acrylic Resist Etching techniques, preparing a set of small test plates. Hard ground etching and soft ground/wet ground plates will be prepared and etched.

  • Day two, participants will be introduced to printing papers, printing inks and how to take your first prints from your plates.

  • Semi-permeable/wash grounds and aquatint effects will be explored.

  • Depending on the dynamics of the particular group – various ways of applying colour can also be demonstrated.

  • The learning ethos will be one of individual development and self-directed exploration, with the encouragement of a practising artist printmaker and other class participants. Help and inspiration will be given throughout to enable development and further creative printmaking.

  • We aim for it to be a supportive and encouraging weekend, while covering a lot of ground and being informative.

Materials and Equipment:

  • General shared tools and equipment are provided on the course.

  • Having your own craft knife and drawing kit can be an advantage.

  • There is a range of texture materials and printing papers available for soft ground, however you are also welcome to bring in some additional material if you wish.

  • The only materials that you will be requested to pay for are the pieces of copper you select, the type of paper you use and a £1 donation for the ink.

What could this course lead to:

  • This course can be a standalone course or part of a self-directed series of short courses.

  • The Improvers Evening class is also a good option to take this further. 

  • Once you are reasonable confident in your printmaking skills, you can be considered for membership. Double Elephant has two levels of membership.
